This requires some explanation . . . In the Greek mythos, Demeter was the goddess of the earth, and had a daughter named Persephone, who was springtime. Well, Demeter's brother Hades fell in love with Persephone, and wanted her for his wife. He devised a way to get her into the underworld, by basically opening up the earth and swallowing her. She was very unhappy in the world of the dead, so Hades told her as long as she didn't eat anything, she could leave. Naturally, she became quite hungry, and after thee months she ate three pomegranate seeds. Because she did this, she may be above ground for six months of the year, but she also must forever spend three moths in the underworld. That is why we have winter. Winter is the time when Persephone's mother mourns the loss of her daughter, and all things are dead or in hibernation.

In my picture, I tried to capture the mourning of Demeter, the path to the underworld, and the three pomegranate seeds that led to the imprisonment.

Watercolor on bristol. Approx. 6 X 9
